My good friend and his wife came up from New Jersey this past weekend and we always open up some nice wines. My wife made her recipe for meatballs the night before and picked up some really nice cheeses. I made homemade tomato sauce to go with the meatballs. They were all red wines and although they probably weren’t exact matches in terms of varietal, they still went well enough.
Wine 1 – 2008 Aubert Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard
This was decanted for 2 hours. It came off a tad hot at first but really smoothed out over the coarse of an hour. Big red fruits on the nose and palate. Got a lot of oak flavors but they weren’t overpowering, at least for me. Ended with a long lingering finish. I really enjoyed this. Better than the 08 UV I had maybe two years ago close to release. These wines may need some time in the bottle to really blossom. I gave this 94 points.
Wine 2 – 2009 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate
I was very excited to try this because I loved the 07 but wasn’t nearly as excited about the 06. Had this right after a Aubert Pinot and the first sip was a tad strange. The wine literally cut out on the mid-palate and died. I got really worried because the nose on this was really impressive. Then I took the second sip…..much better. Very well balanced Cab and classic Napa Valley. A more toned down version of the 2007 that I had a while ago. Cassis, dusty berry, touch of cedar and blackberry ending with a very long finish. I gave this 95 points.
Wine 3 – 2004 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon Premiere Napa Valley Auction
Every year, Napa Valley vintners hold a charity auction and make special cuvee’s for the event. This particular wine was made for that and only 60 bottles were produced. I was able to find it real cheap on an online auction. Drank this after a 09 Spottswoode and I wasn’t sure if it was going to hold up to it but it did quite well. It didn’t taste like a 9 year old wine! Lot of dark red fruits but this must have been stored in a well kept cellar! Tasted very similar to the regular Honig Cabernet bottling to me. Found this quite enjoyable, especially for the price! I gave it 92 points.
Wine 4 – 1989 Schloss Schönborn Hattenheimer Nußbrunnen Riesling Auslese
Ended the night with this. Very dark yellow color, borderline brown. I have to admit I had high hopes for the wine after having a 90 Spatlese that I thought was very good. Was surprised how dry this was. Only had a little residual sweetness. Wine wasn’t bad but I don’t think this will improve any more and could even be starting its decline phase. Had a little leftover and tried it on night 2. Was a little better. Wine was showing a little more on the sweet side. Night one 89 points. Night two 90 points.
