Tasting Notes on 6 Wines from our Fall Wine Club Meeting

SEYMOUR WINE CLUB MEETING 10/26/19 – Home of Lew Stanio (10/26/2019)

For our Fall tasting we had an open meeting, meaning we had no theme so everyone could bring whatever they wanted. The wines were all good and we also had some great food. Some BBQ chicken, tortellini with chicken sausage and truffle oil, pheasant piccata and a great assortment of desserts. Onto the wines.

  • 2016 Brotte Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine Barville – France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Decanted for 1.5 hours. Aromas of herbs, raspberry garnacha, cherry and smoked meats. Flavors of chocolate, herbs, smoked meats, iron and earth. Ends with a long iron infused finish of 25-30 seconds. Got just a slight bit of heat on this but nothing I was overly concerned about. This was my favorite wine of the night. I thought it was mine and turns out I was right although it did seem this had a bit more Syrah in there than I remember. That threw me off initially. This finished 3rd on the night. (93 pts.)
  • 2018 Gavalas Winery Santorini – Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
Tasted blind. Aromas of smoke, slate, flowers and a hint of citrus. Flavors of slate, lemon and a touch grapey. Nice acidity but ends with a shorter finish and a thinner palate than the rest of the wines this evening. This wine finished tied for 5th on the night. (88 pts.) Available
  • 2016 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis – USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted blind. Aromas of plum, blueberry, cherry, potpourri and vanilla. Flavors of vanilla, cherry and blackberry. Ends with a 20-25 second finish with cherry notes. This was quite a big wine and surprised when the bag came off. I had guessed a Cab from Washington but would not have guessed Napa Valley. Regardless, this was a easy drinking Cab that provided considerable pleasure. This was my second favorite wine of the night and it finished as the overall wine of the night. (92 pts.) Available
  • 2016 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville – USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Tasted blind. Aromas of dusty berry, blackberry, currant, mocha and earth. Flavors of blackberry, currant and cherry. Not wide range of flavors but the flavors that were there were persistent. Initially ended with a shorter 15 second finish. Upon re-tasting though this had opened up revealing a bigger palate and longer finish. I gave this 90 points and it finished second of the night. (90 pts.) Available
  • 2018 Invivo Sauvignon Blanc SJP Sarah Jessica Parker – New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Tasted blind. The nose on this was a dead giveaway for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Tons of grapefruit, passion fruit, cat pee and lemon. The palate though was quite interesting with flavors of gooseberry, lemon, wet stone and mineral. Ends with a 20 second finish and a nice acidity. I was pleasantly surprised when the bag came off. This finished 4th on the night. (90 pts.)
  • 2016 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Campo de Borja Tres Picos – Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja
Tasted blind. Aromas of boysenberry, bacon fat, currant and raspberry. Flavors of raspberry, blueberry, cherry and beef stew. Ends with a cherry and blueberry finish of 20 seconds. Though for sure this was a Chateauneuf-du-pape but was surprised it was the Tres Picos. Been a while since I have had it. This finished tied for 5th on the night. (90 pts.) Available

Overall we had a very solid set of wines. The Stag’s Leap and the Brotte were neck and neck for my wine of the night although the group favored the Stag’s Leap overall. Always some interesting wines at wine club.
